If you often face landscaping or brush clearing concerns, you’ve likely heard of a Bush Hog®. Bush hogging, otherwise known as brush hogging, is the act of brush cutting or rough cut mowing to clear the land for farming, hunting, development, and other uses. It’s a great tool and we’re excited to help you find the right model!

So What is a Bush Hog®?

A Bush Hog is a type of rotary mower that attaches to the back of a tractor using a three-point hitch and power of the PTO. Instead of using rigid blade attachments as a lawnmower does, Bush Hog blades operate on hinges! This difference makes the Bush Hog ideal for use in heavy brush because the better flexibility of the blade allows it to move around large rocks or stumps and return to its normal position.

Choosing the Right Option

There are various models available and it's important to choose an option that will work the best with your available tractor. The main factors you should consider include horsepower, deck width, and the connector.

You should only allow up to a ten percent difference in horsepower ratings between the rotary cutter and the tractor you intend to use. For example, if you have a tractor rated for 50 HP, then you should purchase a model in the 40 to 50 HP range!

The horsepower of your tractor will also influence the deck width you should purchase. Typically a 25 HP tractor can handle deck widths up to 5 ft, for instance. If you’re unsure what ratio would work best for your equipment, don’t hesitate to speak with us!

Lastly, a Bush Hog will require a three-point connector and PTO, so you may have to consider the additional purchase of a conversion kit if your tractor doesn’t already have these capabilities.

Using a Bush Hog can efficiently create new opportunities for your land, but it’s essential to find the right model. Our team at West Hills Tractor, located in Jonesborough, TN, would be happy to help you choose the best fit! We are proud to serve the Johnson City and Greeneville areas.
