Once harvest season is over, many farmers are looking to shut down and store their tractors for the winter. But before you park your tractor in the barn, it’s a good idea to winterize it first so that your tractor can stay in good condition over the winter months and be ready to serve you again come springtime. Here are our tips on how to winterize your tractor.

Clean Your Tractor

After many months of heavy usage, your tractor is probably pretty dirty and muddy from plowing through the fields. Take advantage of a sunny day to thoroughly wash your tractor, including hosing out its undercarriage. Lubricate any moving parts once your tractor is dry again to keep them limber. It’s also a good idea to tidy up the cab and operational area.

Perform Necessary Repairs

There are likely several maintenance tasks that need to be done now that your tractor doesn’t need to be in play. Changing the oil, checking the tire pressure, adding fuel stabilizer to the tank, and greasing parts are all good tasks to perform. Removing the battery from your tractor’s engine and placing it on a tender in a warm, dry place will help prevent it from dying.

Store Securely

While your tractor is hardy and can be parked outside, this leaves it somewhat vulnerable to weather damage and pest infestation and even theft. Storing your tractor underneath a cover and indoors is best; even keeping the tractor under a carport or roof will protect it more than leaving it entirely exposed.
